Hard-charging Zelos gives Rockingham fans 'Days of Thunder' fever

Hard-charging Zelos gives Rockingham fans 'Days of Thunder' fever

Dan Zelos brought a dash of Hollywood glamour to Rockingham Motor Speedway last weekend (25-27 August), as the talented young Norfolk ace battled to a brace of hard-earned top ten finishes in the Renault UK Clio Cup – behind the wheel of a car whose livery bore a striking resemblance to Cole Trickle’s iconic Chevrolet Lumina from ‘Days of Thunder’.

Rockingham is the only circuit in the UK to incorporate an oval section – a style more typically associated with North American racing – and Zelos decided to pay homage to this with a special NASCAR-inspired roof design on his distinctive, Evergreen Tyres-sponsored Clio.

Fittingly, the East Anglian teenager was on the pace from the outset, placing eighth amongst the 20 high-calibre contenders during free practice in the fiercely-disputed, single-make British Touring Car Championship feeder series, despite electing not to fit new tyres on budget grounds. Unfortunately, that lack of prior running on fresh rubber would hurt Zelos in qualifying, as he struggled to get up-to-speed quickly enough and lined up a disappointed 14th and 12th on the grid.

In race one, the 19-year-old boldly took the high line heading into Deene Hairpin for the first time – an audacious strategy that would pay off as he gained five spots to ninth, swiftly snatching another through the final chicane to come through in eighth position. Thereafter, Zelos harried Lucas Orrock all the way to the finish to claim a very solid clutch of points, almost latching onto the rear of the three-way tussle over fourth by the time the chequered flag flew.

The highly-rated Dereham-based hotshot repeated his opening lap heroics in front of the live ITV4 television cameras the next day, feistily fighting his way through to sixth until a tap from behind at the chicane sent him fishtailing one way and then the other, prompting an incredible save of which NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt would have been proud.

The delay cost Zelos three places, before he moved over for title-chasing WDE Motorsport team-mate Paul Rivett, going on to follow the three-time champion past Jade Edwards for ninth with an opportunistic move on lap six.

Matching the leaders for pace, he dug deep to reel in the six-way scrap over the final step on the rostrum and whilst ninth was scant reward for a truly gutsy performance, it did serve to maintain seventh spot in the championship standings with just two rounds remaining on the 2017 Renault UK Clio Cup calendar – beginning at Silverstone on 15-17 September.

“I wanted to do something a little bit different to stand out from the crowd at Rockingham,” revealed the Norwich University of Arts Graphic Design undergraduate and former Dereham Sixth Form College student. “The ‘Days of Thunder’ theme seemed like fun, and I think the car looked pretty cool – it certainly attracted a lot of admiring glances and positive comments.

“Unfortunately, the new roof livery didn’t bring us much luck in qualifying! On our first effort, we had a buckled wheel and then on the second run, I couldn’t quite get the best out of the tyres. Rockingham is notoriously abrasive as a circuit, and we only used two new tyres during practice due to financial constraints. When we bolted on a fresh set all-round on Saturday, the car felt quite different and we struggled to nail the right set-up.

“An additional challenge was that I like more of an ‘oversteery’ car, whereas my team-mates Paul and Lee [Pattison] prefer understeer, so the general direction that we pursued as a team didn’t really suit my driving style in qualifying. The races, happily, were a different matter and in both of them, the lion’s share of the work was done on the first lap. I took the decision to stay out wide going into Turn One, because I knew everybody would stack up on the inside. It was a risk, but a calculated risk and it paid off perfectly.

“I still wasn’t entirely happy with the car in race one, which prevented me from properly launching an attack on Orrock, but still, eighth was a very solid result given where we had started so I was satisfied with that. Race two was then a similar story on the opening lap and I’d made up six positions when I was tagged at the chicane, which sent me sideways. Fortunately, I was able to collect it all together heading onto the banking, but the loss of momentum killed my run all the way down the straight, which cost me several places.

“We had caught back up to the pack in front by the end so we clearly had some decent pace, which went to show what might have been but for the first lap contact. Nonetheless, another top ten finish completed a good rescue job and we learned a lot over the course of the weekend that we will take with us to Silverstone. Provided we get qualifying right, there’s no reason at all why we shouldn’t be pushing for the podium there – it’s beginning to feel a little overdue...”

Rob Smith emerges unscathed from unfortunate Rd15 accident

No.37 MINI not so lucky with damage ruling car out of Rd16

Top three series bid dealt heavy blow in penultimate event

All attention turns to ending season on high in Donington finale

Oulton Park local Rob Smith endured a bitterly frustrating return to his ‘home’ track on Saturday, 19th August, when a luckless multi-car accident in the first of the weekend’s two contests resulted in chassis damage which ultimately ruled him out of the event’s second encounter too.

Dealing a hammer blow to the Evergreen Tyres, Oak Tyres, GroupTyre and BMTR-supported driver’s hopes of ending the season inside the coveted championship top three, Crewe-based Smith now heads into next month’s finale at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit focused on nothing less than ending the year with more wins.

“It was a really frustrating day, with Charlie [Butler-Henderson] and Mark [Wakefield] having DNFs we really could have picked up some good points on them but that’s how it goes”, said a deflated Smith, “We’ll just have to see what we can do at Donington now, try and win and end the season on a high – that’s all we can aim for after this weekend.”

Arriving at Oulton with realistic hopes of adding to his season podium tally, the second of the year’s two MINI Festival race meetings started strongly with the rapid MINI UK VIP Customer Team driver circulating the damp 1.65-mile Fosters Circuit configuration with the fourth quickest time.

While somewhat frustrated not to have secured pole position, which he felt more than capable of achieving, the multiple category race winner was just 0.278 seconds shy of the quickest time of the session with a best lap of 1m07.390 seconds (88.35mph).

Just prior to the start of round 15 later on Saturday morning, a heavy downpour arrived at Oulton Park which raised a number of question marks with regard to potential tyre choice for the opening encounter for the JCW runners.

Smith and the MINI UK VIP Customer Team opted to hedge their bets by opting for treaded Dunlops on the rear of the No.37 MINI and slick rubber on the front. No sooner had the cars circulated on the way to the grid, though, the series front runner knew the choice was an incorrect one with the track surface nowhere near as wet as expected.

Despite his issues with grip, and overheating rear tyres, Smith climbed into the top three on lap one of the race and he performed impressively to keep the field behind him. Maintaining third smartly the next time around, on lap three the contest began to come unravelled as the rear end became more and more of a handful and inclined to snap away on the fast-drying track.

Following a hairy moment at Druids, where he took to the grass at high speed, Smith dropped to 12th position and then slipped back another couple of places prior to the appearance of the Safety Car on lap six.

At the resumption on the ninth tour Smith maintained the placing but his race was run just a couple of laps later in the aftermath of a multi-car collision at Knickerbrook. After contact with the barriers and an already-stricken MINI, having steered onto the grass in avoidance of Mark Wakefield’s car, Smith ended his involvement there and then with a MINI beyond repair for round 16.

“We had a bit of a downpour so gambled with wets on the rear, but when we got on track behind the Safety Car the circuit was bone dry”, explained Smith, “There wasn’t time to do anything else, so we decided to just stick it out and hope for the best. I managed to hold them off for the first couple of laps but then had a huge moment at Druids, bouncing across the grass, and about 10 got past.

“The car started getting more and more lairy and then, after the Safety Car, there was carnage at Knickerbook. When I arrived there were four cars stranded, I aimed for a gap but unfortunately Mark [Wakefield], who I think had been winded, rolled back into my path so I took to the grass to avoid him, the car got away and went straight into the wall and a car that was already there.”

He added: “We’ve had worse accidents than that this year, the impact wasn’t that bad, but because the car hit the Armco and then the other car which was already there it caused a lot of damage to the chassis legs when meant we couldn’t do race two. If we’d been on pole, as we should have been, we wouldn’t have taken that tyre gamble. It’s not been the weekend we wanted at all.”

There is a now a lengthy five week break ahead of the finale of the MINI Challenge season, over the weekend 23rd/24th September at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit in Leicestershire, where the series will rejoin the high-profile British GT Championship package.

Championship front-runner Rob Smith eyeing wins at Oulton

•    Local favourite determined to break into top three of standings
•    Sponsors Evergreen Tyres and Oak Tyres target ‘home’ success

Home favourite Rob Smith cannot wait to return to his local track, Oulton Park in Cheshire, this coming Saturday, 19th August, when the MINI Challenge resumes for the seventh event of the season – the annual North West ‘MINI Festival’.

Smith, who heads to the picturesque track off the back of impressive victories during the previous two race meetings at Brands Hatch, is also determined to maintain the outstanding qualifying form which locked out pole position at the Kent venue’s Indy Circuit and Grand Prix Circuit layouts.

While contact early in the second race at Brands Hatch GP a week ago triggered a hugely frustrating retirement and pegged the Crewe-based driver back to sixth in the championship, he will arrive at Oulton park only 14 points shy of the top three. Importantly though, when ‘drop scores’ are taken into account he is actually fourth in the standings and just 12 points outside the runner-up spot.

Justifiably confident in his own ability, and with Oulton Park bringing lots of local support for the MINI UK VIP Customer Team racer, Smith is hoping for his strongest weekend yet and is focused on delivering major points scores in both of Saturday’s all-action races.

Notably, Oulton Park is also the local venue for two of his chief sponsors, Evergreen Tyres and Oak Tyres which are based in Haydock in nearby Merseyside. Clearly, a successful weekend for all concerned would be a major fillip ahead of the championship finale next month at Donington Park.

“It’s great to be back at Oulton, I love the track and have always gone well there in whatever I’ve raced”, said Smith, “It’s always good being at your home circuit and it’s a very important event for my sponsor Oak Tyres, who are local, as they’re a key part of the Evergreen Tyres relationship. We should have some big crowds for the MINI Festival, so I can’t wait.

“On drop scores we’re only a point outside third in the championship and I think P2 is still on the cards by the end of the year. We need to keep up the recent form in qualifying and in the first race, then focus on making it count in race two as well. There are only three people I need to beat to make that happen, so we need to keep doing what we’ve been doing with podiums and wins.”

Without any shadow of a doubt, had it not been for some serious misfortune with car gremlins and contact from rivals during the 2017 campaign Smith would almost certainly be battling it out for the coveted MINI Challenge crown into the final two events.

Even so, he has consistently displayed his electric pace and a few days from now will be aiming to replicate the speed which delivered the Sunoco Fastest Driver of the Weekend accolade at Oulton during the championship curtain-raiser over Easter weekend on the full International Circuit.

“If things had gone our way this season I genuinely believe we could have been on pole every weekend”, added the Evergreen Tyres, BMTR, GroupTyre and Oak Tyres supported racer, “When we visited Oulton earlier in the year I had the fastest lap of the weekend in the race, I just couldn’t get a clear lap in qualifying. Hopefully we can change that this time around and then push for the win.”

Qualifying for the MINI Festival will begin at 08.30 on Saturday, 19th August, with round 15 getting underway at 10.50 followed by round 16 at 14.40. Live timing of all of the Oulton Park action will be available HERE

SECOND VICTORY OF MINI CHALLENGE SEASON AT BRANDS GP FOR ROB SMITH

SECOND VICTORY OF MINI CHALLENGE SEASON AT BRANDS GP FOR ROB SMITH

Rapid MINI Challenge front-runner Rob Smith claimed his second lights-to-flag victory of the 2017 season at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit on Sunday, 6th August, with an impressive performance during round 13 of the campaign.

Adding to the win he achieved on the Kent venue’s shorter Indy Circuit configuration during the previous event last month, the Evergreen Tyres, GroupTyre and BMTR supported ace was again the driver to beat with searing pace in both qualifying and race trim.

Race one of the weekend was by no means straightforward for the MINI UK VIP Customer Team competitor – the initial start was red flagged, after a multi car incident, and the re-started contest concluded under Safety Car conditions. Making textbook starts at each time of asking, though, Smith bossed proceedings from the front to climb the podium for the sixth time this season.

“They didn’t make it easy for me – I got away by a mile twice but we had the red flag, then the Safety car”, he reflected, “The team have done an amazing job with the car, they did a great job after the problems we had at Rockingham to get us turned around to where we’ve been for the last few rounds and where we are now.

“When we were on the Indy Circuit last month we struggled with race pace a little bit so we worked on that on Friday in testing and got the car exactly how we wanted. It’s fantastic to get another win, especially at Brands.”

Going into the Brands Hatch GP weekend confident in his ability to challenge for pole position on the Kent venue’s full configuration, Smith didn’t disappoint with a fantastic lap of 1m50.245 seconds (79.45mph) in a very tricky rain-affected qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.

Making a fantastic start to round 13 from pole, he set about controlling the race from the front but midway through the opening lap red flags were shown as a result of a five-car collision at Surtees. Undoing the Evergreen Tyres racer’s brilliant launch he had it all to do again but, at the second time of asking, Smith once more made the most of pole position.

With the race distance shortened to just 10 minutes as a result of the delay, the action was set to be frenetic but Smith focused on the road ahead as he set his sights on putting some distance between himself and the chasing pack.

Into lap two, Smith held an advantage of 0.9 seconds from Lawrence Davey and the next time across the line he had increased his lead to 1.2 seconds. As a result of two cars crashing out at Paddock Hill Bend, though, the race was neutralised and the Safety Car deployed to again erode Smith’s lead.

With the clock ticking down during the recovery of the stricken MINIs, the Safety Car headed the field over the line to the chequered flag with Smith taking a richly deserved second victory of the 2017 season.

Drawing a top four start on the partially reversed grid for round 14, meaning a double podium was certainly on the cards at the very least, Smith’s involvement only lasted until the beginning of lap two as a result of unfortunate contact.

Edged back to fifth place initially, he stayed with the lead quartet and into the final corner at the end of the opening lap Smith got alongside the two cars immediately ahead. Unfortunately, though, contact speared the No.37 MINI into the pit wall and although he recovered, the damage to his car then pitched him off the track and into retirement on lap two.

There are just 10 das to wait until the next event on the MINI Challenge calendar, a standalone one-day race meeting at Oulton Park in Cheshire – Smith’s home track – on Saturday, 19th August.
