Excitement has surrounded Evergreen-backed Renault Clio Cup competitor Dan Zelos since before the 2018 campaign even began.
In testing he has shown himself capable of posting class-leading times, but in the opening rounds bad luck conspired against him.
Rounds 5 and 6 of the Renault Clio Cup at Thruxton should have proved a tonic and initially they did. One of Dan’s favourite tracks, he started the weekend fantastically qualifying in fifth and fourth for rounds five and six.
On race day confidence was high. Dan had married good form and good fortune in qualifying and belief was strong.
But a slow start saw his fifth place on the grid slip and he had to battle to finish 17th.
Round six offered hope of redemption for the Dereham Dynamo. But another difficult start saw him drop to the back of the field and despite fighting hard to recover to 10th, his chances of further improvement were dashed when the race was cut short due to a big crash involving his WDE teammate Lee Pattison and Team Pyro’s Zak Fulk.
With plenty of positives to take from this weekend, Dan will head into Oulton Park in Cheshire in the knowledge that his best performances are just around the corner.
